Sound output sticks to external monitor

I am running Ubuntu 20.04 on a Lenovo Flex 14. When I connect to an
external monitor both before and after connecting a blue tooth earphone the
sound continues to come from the monitor. The monitor is attached via an
HDMI cable.

It is also the case that with the external monitor connected I try to
switch to another sound output such as the computer's internal speakers I
can not do so, the sound continues to flow through the external monitor.

With PAVU I can turn off the external monitor's sound connection and then I
can switch to either a bluetooth device or the computer's internal speakers.

I have turned off bluetooth and turned it back on. I have reinstalled the
bluetooth earphones. I also have a bluetooth speaker, the problem is the
same.

I suspect that there is a setting somewhere telling the system to default
to the external monitor.

Any suggestions?

thanks

I have not been able to find anything that pertains specifically to this
situation. I find suggestions to completely purge pulse.
