Getting new hardware - can I just move the disk?

Well, in my case I cannot even get a live USB/CD working on the system so I can
clone the disk with GParted or similar.
The first step in the link above is to make sure you have a backup, and this is
what this discussion is really all about in a way.
You need to get at the source and target disk while unmounted, which implies a
bootable live system.

But I have failed 100% to get a workable live system going here.

And the servir is just that, a server, no desktop so GParted cannot be used
directly.
