It was several years ago when I last needed to do this. From what I
recall it was a PITA to format the drive on Linux. That wasn't a
problem for me, since I had a Windows box I wanted to use the drive on
anyway, so I formatted it there. I continue to use the drive on Linux,
macOS, and Windows and I've never had a problem reading and writing
files.

Agreed, but that's only really practical if you're only going to use
it on Linux.
