I would not call either KDE or Cinnamon "slim". They both need
hardware OpenGL to work well.

Lubuntu is the lightest of the *buntu family.

sudo apt install lubuntu-desktop

... should get it working. But I strongly suggest trying it in a VM
first before doing it on a live system.
