apt-get update timing out

Did you try just re-booting the router?  I assume you did.  Mine (not
the same make) has to be rebooted every few weeks, it loses the route
to some of the wifi devices occasionally for no obvious reason.  The
devices can talk to the internet and to other devices but other
devices cannot talk to it.
