>From what I already know about Xubuntu and this monitor, they are not
the problem. I was running with this monitor at 2k with no trouble at
all on Xubuntu 20.04 on my old motherboard (ASRock Z97 Pro4, Intel i7,
on-board video) using a DVI-HDMI converter cable (it didn't like a
straight HDMI connection).
The main difference is the new combo (ASUS X570-Pro + AMD Ryzen 9
5950X), which requires either a CPU with on-board GPU (like the i& but
not the 5950X) or a discrete video card.
Thus, it seems pretty obvious to me that *Ubuntu can handle it (and I
would trust and hope that 21.10 does so at least as well as 20.04),
but the two video cards I've used so far don't. The Radeon HD 5450
couldn't handle the HDMI with 2k at all, and the DVI-HDMI cable should
have worked but it didn't produce the correct video res at all. The
GE Force GT 710 does not rate well enough (for which I could kick
myself twice, once for getting the 5450 at all and again for not
checking out the 710 thoroughly enough).
I have a new one coming tomorrow that looks better all around and
claims to handle HDMI 2k up front - it's a Gigabyte GV-N1030D4-2GL
GeForce GT 1030. I've had Gigabyte cards before at least once and I
recall liking it.
Here's hoping!
Thanks to all.
