New M/B-CPU refuses to boot

for too long (not sure how long that is), it freezes up and stops
responding to any input.  I have to cycle power (the reset switch isn't
working yet either) and goo through all that boot stuff again.

I noticed this on both the simple graphics boot and the nomodeset boot.

No idea why this is happening.
