On my laptop I use terminal to run the adduser utility with the
--encrypt-home option to give some protection to my files because
laptops are carried on holiday etc. so are to some extent vulnerable to
theft. My user IDs and passcodes are all stored in a Revelation file so
anybody who wants to steal my laptop to get into my bank accounts would
need to get past two levels of encryption which gives me loads of time
to phone the bank and get my accounts locked until I get home.
The only files I encrypt at home apart from the Revelation one are my
backup archives, using gpg, because there's always several copies in
various places. I don't encrypt anything else on either my server or
desktop computer because it's a pain in the backside, they never leave
home and I fitted good door locks.
