Upgraded to 20.04 and now my VNC connection no longer works...

I have a laptop running Ubuntu 20.04 after a dist-upgrade from 18.04.
When it ran on 18.04 I could access it using VNC from my Windows10 main computer
and work in the GUI environment.
But after the upgrade was done and verified working for regular ssh and
on-screen work I finally needed to use VNC and now the laptop is not responding.
It works fine over ssh (using PuTTY) and directly on the hardware screen so it
is not in any way dead. It is now stowed away in its cupboard for use via the
network only.
But VNC does not work after the upgrade. :(
As far as I can see the last time VNC was used is on Feb 21,2021 (timestamp of
the log file in ~/.vnc/ ), and that was probably before the dist-upgrade was
performed.
What to do to get it running again?
