What Ralf said.

Do not change the font size. This is the wrong way to do this. Kate is
doing exactly what you asked: you asked for a big font, you got a big
font. You can't have it both ways. That's why this is the wrong way.

Change the DPI size.

GNOME has a fractional scaling setting but if you're using Kate then
that implies you're using KDE.  I don't like KDE myself (too many
fiddly little settings in too many places, but it doesn't let me
configure the things that I personally want because the KDE devs don't
work the way I do) so I can't advise on configuring it.

But apparently only under Wayland. I don't know if you're using the
most recent version of KDE, or Wayland or X.org, so I can't help
there. You said Kubuntu but not what version.
