I removed snapd completely from my little Ubuntu Server and it saved
some memory, reduced boot time, and everything works. Mint also
removes snap support completely from its downstream distro of Ubuntu.
You certainly _can_ live without it.

Saying that, I actively do use snap on openSUSE, because it's a quick
easy way to get some programs that openSUSE doesn't include.

Depends if you can find things you want from other sources.

I get a menu bar with Chrome using Unity.

If you encounter compatibility problems with some websites on Firefox,
there are other browsers based on the Google Blink engine without
Google involvement. I am happy with Chrome myself but then I pay for a
Google Account with extra storage etc. -- and no ads.

You might want to try MS Edge, Vivaldi, or Opera.
