well, you said that *you* need to care to keep it up to date ... 
my point was that *you* dont ;)

it is the developer/maintainer that needs to care, everything else is
fully automatic ... 

regarding duplication, i think the majority of newer desktop snaps
simply use one of the gnome/qt framework snaps today [1], [2], so the
desktop libs only exist once in that version ... same goes for things
like libc or libssl that come from the core snap ... yes, if your snap
ships any non-standard extra libs or comes with newer versions than the
frameworks provide, you, as a developer need to update more frequently
... but you as a user dont have to care (also, due to confinement even
an open vulnerability in some lib will likely not be able to cause the
damage it could when installed as a deb).
