Unexpected Kernel versions in two different x86_64 systems

Hi,
I was working on two ThinkPads - an x230i and a T420 when I noticed that,
despite both running Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS x86_64, they have different kernels
installed.
ThinkPad T420: 5.11.0-43 kernel
ThinkPad X230i: 5.4.0-91 kernel
The T420 had its HDD replaced with an SSD when I installed 20.04LTS on it
and 20.04 was installed from a USB memory stick.
The X230i was upgraded from Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS using Software Updater.
The differing ways the systems got upgraded to 20.04 LTS could be the
reason for the kernel differences. However, is that theory correct?
TIA,
Ian
