I have a X220 notebook running Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS. I have never had an
issue with the machine except when I had to replace the fan assembly
and CPU heat sink. All the Ubuntu upgrades have run flawlessly.
The machine specs also claim it only supports 8G of memory. I upgraded
it to 16G which works. Newer Lenovo models probably have a higher RAM
limit.

I replaced the HD with an SSD drive without any issues as well. All I
did was remove the old disk and then boot and install from the SSD
drive. I then copied what I needed from the old drive attached with a
SATA to USB cable.

Not too hard. There are a lot of little screws, but the locations are
marked. You can get the disassembly instructions online. The HD removal
and replacement only requires a single screw on the hard drive
compartment.
I find the machine to be well made with rugged construction.
