PS:

Even command line requires a proper "digital cable". With a broken
"analog cable" we might be able to see the command line with
"experimental colours".

Off-topic:

Reminds me of some issues with SCART's "device control". 

Description in keywords:

  "laboratory power supply (at best a battery)"

  "(At worst) I do not care for galvanic isolation at all, but I like
  bizarre workarounds, that I never ever would tolerate, if anybody
  else (but me) would do the same"

In the SCART home video days I had tendencies to "fix" missing control
voltage, (lets call it) "by providing the control voltage by an
alternative power source".

Note: I've never done something that odd when doing my work as a
professional audio and video engineer.
