Hi,

unfortunately this seems to be incorrect. Without an xorg.conf and
without any drop in files Ubuntu seemingly defaults to the "modesetting"
driver, since the "intel" driver isn't maintained for years. It's
broken with the mainline, stable and I guess with the latest longterm
kernels from https://www.kernel.org/.

For example,see
https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Ubuntu-Debian-Abandon-Intel-DDX
and https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/intel_graphics#Installation .

The good news, the "modesetting" driver works without issues, excepted
for some software, such as Firefox and Chromium, so the OP's issues are
likely not related to the driver.

I stay with 4.19 longterm kernels, while 5.4 longterm kernels might
work with the "intel" driver, too. However, IIRC non of the more recent
kernels, such as 5.10 longterm and later can be used with the "intel"
driver.

If just one install fails to boot into the GUI, then the cable isn't
defect.

Regards,
Ralf
