safe way to attach a possibly malware loaded USB device?

I just got another piece of USB hardware and don't have any real reason to be suspicious
but I was curious if there is a USB "Safe mode" to prevent a device from acting
in a malicious way.  I guess the universal nature allows a given device to pretend
to be just about anything and not sure of what it could eventually do with malicious code.
