Upgrade from 19.10 to 20.04 failed - upgrade process broken

I upgraded Xubuntu 18.04 to 20.04 on my 2008 Macbook yesterday. Went
through fine.

I saw 1 transient dependency error but it went through all on its own.

Sadly it did not fix an existing login problem; in fact it made it
worse. However, now, there is a documented fix.

(What that is is irrelevant to this discussion, I think.)

I haven't tried to upgrade my only 19.10 installation because I intend
to reformat and start over.
