Using wpa_supplicant.conf to predefine a wifi connection

I have a laptop running Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS and it is mostly accessed
via PuTTY. It is wired to the network when at home.
But now I need to move it to a different location without a wired
network connection. So I figured I would do the same I always do on
Raspberry Pi units:
Before I move them I edit the /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
file and enter the login data for the WiFi network on the target
location.
I also have a script that runs 10 min after boot to report the fact
that the machine booted and which IP address it uses.
So after firing up on the target location, just wait a minute and then
read the email after which the PuTTY connection can be made to the
correct address.
But...
I found that on my Ubuntu 18.04.4 machine there is NO
wpa_supplicant.conf file!!!!
So how can I preconfigure the WiFi network on the machine so it can
connect when it is powered on at the location?
Seems like there must be some other file on this version of Linux that
manages the WiFi connections...
