scanner not working but driver files all present

I didn't say it did, I said it may have. I'm not privy to the internals 
of the Brother scanner driver nor its installation method: I just used 
it and it worked. As a product of a commercial entity, it could very 
easily have recorded the cpuid, make and model, amount of installed 
memory, size of disk, and who knows what else; and configured itself so 
that it would work. I'm not saying it did; I'm saying that this way of 
working is commonplace in commercial software.
