The easiest way to do a clean shutdown on a locked-up Linux box that
is disk thrashing is to do 1 of 2 things:

Press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get to a text console.
Wait for it to appear -- it can take many minutes if the machine is
thrashing hard.
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del 7 times within a second.

Browser lockups are 1 reason I use 2 browsers. Firefox (well,
Waterfox) for normal browsing, Chrome for very Javascript-intensive
stuff.

If one dies, the other is usually fine.
