That's a good idea, command line commands with spaces. And the usage of
update isn't confusing at all, we just need to add

update package index files
update packages
update packages no remove

to your list.

It doesn't break portability, since at least Debian will follow it
soon. And since we will drop support for all Ubuntu releases, that are
still providing apt and apt-get, there will be no more confusion.
