How can I investigate the cause of total hang? Is there some information that I should pay attention to in order to get some hint?

I just had a mouse problem like this :) Also try
ctrl-alt-F1 and ctrl-alt-F7 . If you can get to the
console, then you can hunt around the log files and ps
etc. Maybe something like "find /var -mtime -1 " or something
if system is not normally too busy.

In my case, the left button on the mouse died and I was
sure the display manager crashed. After installing gdm over lightdm,
I finally realised the problem. I've found that

cat /dev/input/mouse0 | od

or something similar may help although just moving it will generate
data.
