IF (that is the big if) you had 32bit 16.04 the upgrade to 18.04 would be 32bit 
also where a fresh (desktop) install of 18.04 would be 64bit, I know that will 
work as I did it, I can't say if the next upgrade 18.04 to 20.04 will work the 
as well (or at all)?
