best way to install Ubuntu on external hard drive?

Did you open the case and unplug/disconnect the motherboard battery? I
would suggest unplugging everything including the little battery storing
the settings, wait awhile (10 minutes?) and then reassembling to see if the
"supervisor" menu becomes available after resetting everything.
