Tommy

Thanks for the reply and all the information.

> I noticed in your previous message the disc you tested on your Ubuntu machine was a CD, and this one is a DVD. Are you sure the optical drive in your Ubuntu machine can read DVDs?

Yes, I installed from a DVD ... I think ... now I'm not 100% sure ...

Here's my hwinfo --cdrom
20: SCSI 101.0: 10602 CD-ROM (DVD)
   [Created at block.249]
   Unique ID: KD9E.4TwT4ua8IW0
   Parent ID: w7Y8.6y_WM93WQ6C
   SysFS ID: /class/block/sr0
   SysFS BusID: 1:0:1:0
   SysFS Device Link: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.2/ata2/host1/target1:0:1/1:0:1:0
   Hardware Class: cdrom
   Model: "HL-DT-ST DVDROM DH16NS30"
   Vendor: "HL-DT-ST"
   Device: "DVDROM DH16NS30"
   Revision: "1.00"
   Driver: "ata_piix", "sr"
   Driver Modules: "ata_piix"
   Device File: /dev/sr0 (/dev/sg1)
   Device Files: /dev/sr0, /dev/cdrom, /dev/disk/by-id/ata-HL-DT-ST_DVDROM_DH16NS30_K689BM54800, /dev/disk/by-path/pci-0000:00:1f.2-ata-2, /dev/dvd
Device Number: block 11:0 (char 21:1)
   Features: DVD
   Drive status: no medium
   Config Status: cfg=new, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown
   Attached to: #1 (IDE interface)
   Drive Speed: 48

That seems pretty conclusive to me. I may be wrong.

> Also there are multiple "flavors" of recordable DVDs. If I recall correctly there are DVD +R and DVD -R media, and one or both might be incompatible with a particular drive. Sometimes the different media the drive can support are listed on the front, but more than likely you might need to discern the drive's model number and search to confirm that it supports the media you have.

I looked up DH16NS30.
https://www.cnet.com/products/lg-dh16ns30-dvd-rom-drive-serial-ata-series/
Under SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS, it states a few different Windows versions

From: https://www.lg.com/ca_en/digital-storage-devices/lg-DH16NS30-internal-dvd-burner
I found a PDF manual that states: "Read compatible for DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+R DL, DVD-R DL, DVD-RW, DVD+RW & DVD-RAM discs" but again only lists Windows under the OS requirements.

Is it possible that the DVD read function is not supported by Ubuntu for this drive?

> It has been a long time since I burned a bootable DVD or CD. It's so much easier to work with a USB stick, and Ubuntu comes with a utility to turn an Ubuntu .iso into a bootable Ubuntu USB stick called "Startup Disk Creator." If you have the iso file on your Mac and can transfer it via your network to the Ubuntu machine, you can use the Startup Disk Creator on the Ubuntu machine to make a bootable USB stick. Similar utilities, such as one called Unetbootin, are available from other places, and you may also be able to use that or another utility to make the bootable USB stick on your Mac or Windows PC.

OK, I'll burn a USB, that seems the way to go forward here.

> I haven't been following the thread, but I suspect this isn't your only option. It's just a shortcut to a "pristine" system. Have you tried creating a new user account under Ubuntu and seeing if you get the same behavior when logged in under that account? You may have "cruft" that's interfering with your sound settings, and a new user account would be one way to rule that out.

I'll try that too.

> There's also the possibility that (despite following the instructions) maybe you created a disk that just isn't bootable. There are lots of ways that can happen. Try creating a bootable USB stick and see if you get farther.

It's worse than that. It's not even readable, though it is on my Windows 10 machine. At present my Ubuntu machine will read CDs but not DVDs.

I think I'll cut my losses and unless the different user approach produces results, I'll burn a USB.

Thanks Tommy
