External touchpad for Ubuntu?

Settings looks quite useful. Is there any official documentation for it,
from an end-users point of view?
Googling for "Ubuntu settings" didn't find much but I did find out that
"settings" is, in fact gnome-control-center, complete with man page.
Also, I wanted to read its source code, just out of curiosity. Looks like
it is written in C, using GTK.
There is a Git repo for it...
