Sorry but that is not correct advice. Some apps just don't have a repo
or presence in the Ubuntu Software store. That doesn't mean they should
be avoided. It just means you need to do things manually where they are
concerned.
But telling somebody to just "don't use" an app because it's not in one
of those places is really stupid. Some really good software for open
source is shipped as .deb files from their vendors. It's not your place
to tell people not to use these files. What next? Are you going to tell
people to also not use apps that are available in source code on GitHub
and for which you need to download the source and compile manually? And
then what?
