 I know you have already (possibly) solved this issue to your satisfaction
but one additional thing you might consider -- you might find some adhesive
rubber bumpers or "feet" (like go on the bottom of an appliance to protect
the finish of a shelf or table) and put them on the top of the screen so
the laptop lid doesn't close all the way, staying far enough open to
prevent triggering the close switch. If you cannot find bumpers tall enough
you might stack some to get enough height.

I suggest this not in jest -- a few laptops depend upon airflow around the
keyboard area for cooling purposes, so having it completely closed MIGHT
cause overheating issues, especially if it gets stored in a cupboard with
limited airflow.
