Software updating problem

Since upgrading from 19.04 to 19.10 I have been receiving messages from
the updater saying "Package operation failed. The installation or
removal of a software package failed", but it doesn't give any specific
information. When I did the upgrade to 19.10 it didn't go entirely
smoothly and it said it needed to run dpkg --configure -a at the end.
This seemed to complete OK and the system is working, but I assume my
recent update messages relate to this.

/var/log/syslog says:-
Oct 23 12:35:26 infinity org.debian.apt[1857]:
/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/aptdaemon/progress.py:490: Warning:

It's not clear to me what the problem is nor how I might resolve it.
Help would be appreciated.
