FWIW even 'sudo apt purge firefox' won't remove the firefox related
files inside the user's home.

I guess it won't solve the OP's issue, but you never know.
'sudo apt purge firefox' would tidy up, even remove configurations,
excepted of those in the user's home. The OP could purge all firefox
related packages firefox-locale... and other. I don't know if removing
the firefox package/s from the cache is needed, but it doesn't harm to
do it and after that to install firefox again.
