I have not been following the thread but did you try invoking it
from the command line and look at the output? I have chrome but IIRC
with firefox you may  do "which -a firefox" and
invoke whichever one(s) are there with a verbose flag or something.

Also try looking at netstat and see if it is opening anything.

It is also fun to run "strings" on the executable and look for "--"
to find hidden flags :)
