Testing memory and wiping hard drive before installing Ubuntu

Hi All,
Thanks for your suggestions.
I found these GRUB commands from ubuntuforums.org:-
# Boot whatever is in the CD drive
menuentry "CD on (cd0)" {
insmod udf
set root=(cd0)
chainloader +1
}
I booted from hard drive, pressed the SHIFT keys down, got to GRUB. Pressed
'c' (I think) to get to the GRUB command line.
Put a dban CD-R in optical drive.
Typed in
insmod udf
set root=(cd0)
chainloader +1
And got the error message "invalid EFI filepath"
I am now out of my depth. I will use less subtle means to wipe the drive.
Might use the "scrub" command.
