simple program to send an email

 You may actually want some kind of diagnostic program. IIRC SMTP is just
like most other things- an exchange of text lines. You could either find an 
interactive SMTP debugger or at least something that dumps the exchanges
or a network monitor like tcpdump. I have been using the IMAP part of libetpan
and was wondering about playing with the SMTP side but there should
be a lot of tools out there ( although I expected to find  a download 
capability somewhere to just download all my hotmail but that did not exist
afaict).
