Hi,
I'm using 2 iPads, not as a screen reader, but for drawing and
music productions. one is 9.7-inch and the other 12.9-inch sized iPad.
Today I'm 53 years old. I need reading glasses +1.5 diopters and
sometimes even more. When I became 40+ I needed to use reading glasses
+1.0 diopters, the situation back than wasn't better related to mini
screens.
For reading purpose a screen reader is probably way better than an
iPad, but regarding font sizes and the amount of text that could be
displayed without a page break, let alone scrolling (especially
horizontal scrolling) within in a site, they are most likely all the
same.
For young people with excellent eyes the size is more or less
irrelevant, but for aged people it most of the times is very important.
For my taste 12.9-inch are not optimal, but they are at least a
tolerable minimum, if I want to read a text. +1.5 diopters isn't very
much, but already enough to suffer from small fonts, even when using
reading glasses.
There are al lot of things I can already do with the small 9.7-inch
iPad, but for reading a text or script, anything below 12.9-inch is a
PITA and even 12.9-inch are not optimal.
I've got paperbacks smaller than a 9.7-inch screen. They are no fun to
read either, but at least the formatting of the printed texts is
optimized, so they are comparable to the reading quality of a
12.9-inch iPad. In my experiences variable auto-formatting (even
without the need of horizontal scrolling) is less good than the
formatting of small paperbacks that are a little bit smaller than a
9.7-inch screen.
Regards,
Ralf
