Update for UbuntuMATE 16.04.6 broke the GUI

The syntax
sudo adduser username
as you suggested, and, as was otherwise suggested, was the solution.
My understanding of the command syntax, was wrong - I wrongly thought
that entering
sudo adduser
would prompt me for a username.
