Is it a 32 bit machine, I had forgotten that if you mentioned it? That
does limit your options rather. All the 17 releases are out of support now
I think.
How much RAM have you got? Have you considered getting a new(er) laptop?
On a low power machine you would probably be better off with one of the
less resource hungry flavours. Lubuntu 18.04 is available in 32 bit I
think and goes much better on an old machine. You could try the live
version of that. Not sure whether you can upgrade to Lubuntu 18.04 from
what you have using the live image. You might have to re-install.
