How to install new Ubuntu without a CD

You all are right.
 - it's a laptop
 - it's the CD that's bad
 - it can boot USB (I'm embarassed that this didn't come to mind.  Another
reminder of how old I'm getting to be.)

I'm currently working on a YUMI setup which will solve all of my problems.
In fact I had an old one hidden away and all I'm doing is downloading and
installing a few variants to the drive.
