Perhaps, but more likely the display manager's and its greeter's log
files and perhaps the current xorg log file provides the pointer to the
issue.
A starting point would be
grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log
and for e.g. lightdm
less /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log
less /var/log/lightdm/seat0-greeter.log
less /var/log/lightdm/x-0-greeter.log
less /var/log/lightdm/x-0.log

The OP followed advices and/or run a script from an unknown source.
Just fixing the obviously issue might not fix something very evil under
the hood.
Apart from this concern, knowing what the OP actually run, is the best
step to troubleshoot the issue, even if there shouldn't be something
evil under the hood.
