Try invoking the gui software from the command line, then the messages
should appear inline. I am not sure which app that is though. If you
start it then look at the running processes you will probably find it.
If you can't see it then open a terminal and run
xprop _NET_WM_PID | sed 's/_NET_WM_PID(CARDINAL) = //' | ps `cat`
The mouse cursor should change into a cross. Click in the updater window and in
the terminal you should see the process that has opened it.
