For newer hardware, and for expanded support of hardware, I use the 
newest versions of a linux OS.

I guess I feel that if something is so old thats its not supported, then 
use something else. Does it have an ethernet port? maybe connect a cheap 
access point with a patch cable. Does the laptop have other ways of 
adding wifi cards?

I tend to boot the os live and try things our of the box. You mentioned 
centos. I think they have a live boot from iso or image.

try distros until one works. On some laptops, theres a switch to disable 
wireless. Can you see the interface with lspci?
