Try Ubuntu 17.10 from USB installation disk crashes

On one of my computers (motherboard=M5A99FX PRO R2.0), Ubuntu 17.10 crashes
when attempting to "try ubuntu without installing".  It prints a call trace:

Not sure I typed all that in correctly... here's a picture:

I put the hard drive into another computer and installed 17.10 there and
then reinstalled it in the one that wouldn't boot to USB and it hangs
during boot.  I haven't been able to verify that the problem is the same...
I'm not seeing the call trace.
