Software updater snuck in a package that is unwanted

I have now rebooted the computer, and will leave the updating stuff
for a few days and see what happens.

And, you are correct - in going back through the command line history,
the command that I did run, was
sudo apt autoremove.

And, that is the command that was included in the system response to
the purge command.
