Very strange. An artefact of my setup at work, then, perhaps. I found
the problem, on 2 machines, but I could not find any info on how to
work around it.
Anyway, I switched to Xfce and like it, so it's no problem any more.
I think the Ubuntu switch is going to result in a lot more GNOME
users, and that will result in a flurry of development of GNOME
extensions to make it look and work more like other desktops. That,
overall, is a good thing.
I'd also like to see GNOME extensions subsumed into distro's package
managers and control panels. Here's hoping for some rapid technical
development and improvement.
