What you describe is often what happens when a power supply or hard
drive begins to fail.

Cheap power supplies often fail after a year of continuous use, when the
tops of small capacitors inside begin to bulge. But there can also be
components that burn up from power surges, because cheaper PSUs have
little to no surge protection built in. I had to replace several a year
for customers. but after switching to 80+ certified power supplies, that
problem went away and they last for years.

Of course, thats not to say that expensive PSUs dont fail, because they
do. And drives fail as well, but those are easier to check - you just
have to read the SMART info stored within the drives. But if SMART
errors were happening, your raid controller would be dropping them from
the array.
