Scanner Problems

I use different laptops for separate functions. Each requires documents
to be scanned. I plug the usb scanners into whichever laptop I am using.
there was no problem until Friday. I have found that one of my laptops
which had not been used for a few months still works with the scanners.
The others which get updated on a regular basis do not.
