SSH Problems

I can't connect at all that was what got after installing proftpd. Then I was researching and installed Openssh. But I also under my user name Macmike don't have sudo capabilities. So I don't know if that has anything to do with the issue. I am having to do everything as root since I can't sudo. Another thing as root if I do cd /root it will not go. Plus can't see any root files. I need to get in there to raise my upload limit.
