Pixel based pictures could be really good done with GIMP (yes GIMP has
several drawbacks, but it anyway is professional grade), vector graphics
already become a little bit tricky and NLVE is completely amateurish. I
don't know how good 3D animations nowadays are supported, however, in
the past it wasn't an issue related to the graphics, but to missing
features, such as lip-sync of animated characters to audio tracks.

IOW in my experiences some graphical intensive work could be done with
Linux, other graphical intensive work can't be done, but I guess the
graphics usually isn't the issue, it's simply missing software.
