Hi,

what happens if I make a release update from 16.04 to the next LTS? I
need xorg.conf. FWIW I installed from the Ubuntu server image, just
using the openbox WM, no DE at all.

Another issue likely would become the Adwaita theme.

On Arch Linux I already tested an Adwaita theme > 3.18.0 and GTK2
apps (e.g. claws mail) look disgusting with Adwaita > 3.18.0. At the
moment GTK3 apps and GTK2 apps are still ok, when using Adwaita 3.18.0,
but this much likely will break soon or later completely, since a lot
of other themes are already completely unusable with newer GTK3
releases and seemingly discontinued, not fixed.

Regards,
Ralf
