I must say I do turn off my computer now and then but with standby it
would go down much more often.
The solution you say above is always going to be much more complex than
what we have now because it is basically the same thing; what we have
now, I mean, this is basically a full memory restoration and if you do
it more software-wise for each application it is going to be much more
involved.
Complete memory image restoration is by far the simplest solution.
But we also lack the tools to troubleshoot it. Why does it go wrong?
Previously on this Windows machine (what the hell changed?) there would
be a blue screen of death error that eventually I found (through google
search) that it has an issue with the real time clock setting!!!
Now I don't get bluescreens anymore, it just reboots without giving an
image.
Linux sometimes restores fine for me but with a corrupted video card.
Or with corrupted audio.
The other motherboard I have also doesn't restore correctly (different
chipset, but also old) on both Linux and Windows.
So in those cases I could restore but I then had to log out of my KDE
session, defeating the whole purpose.
On a Mint system I couldn't restore with the kernel Nouveau driver but I
could restore somewhat with the nVidia driver, but then Cinnamon would
instantly crash.
For me it's a real problem but yeah.
Having the computer on can also mean not being able to relax, or not
being able to clear your mind away from computer work etc. Turning
sometimes off can also be time off ;-).
So it is even much more costly than those 60 euros.
I would instantly pay 200 euros to have it fixed.
Without having to change all the hardware around etc.
